RESUMO

A new species of Tricorythopsis is described, illustrated and diagnosed based on nymphs from Par state, Brazil. Tricorythopsis similis sp. nov. is related to Tricorythopsis rondoniensis (Dias, Cruz Ferreira) based on abdominal terga IIIVII with acute tubercles medially located on posterior margins, and by the absence of the transversal line on operculate gill. However, the new species can be identified by the following combination of characteristics: general coloration yellowish brown, with blackish and purplish marks irregularly distributed; maxillary palp 1-segmented; segment II of labial palp shorter than segment I and longer than segment III; femora and tibiae with margins covered by long, pectinate setae; tarsal claws with 4 to 5 marginal denticles and 4+2 very small, submarginal denticles. This is the first species of Tricorythopsis recorded from Par state.

RESUMO

Simulium mutucuna, a species described based on a single female from Roraima state, was previously synonymized with Simulium paynei and currently is considered a synonym of Simulium rubrithorax. In the present paper we present morphological and molecular evidence supporting the validity of S. mutucuna based on analysis of specimens from Brazil, Venezuela and Mexico. We redescribe the female and describe, for the first time, the male, pupa and larva of S. mutucuna and discuss the morphological differences between this species and the others that are already considered as its senior synonyms. Currently, the distribution of S. mutucuna is restricted to Roraima state. The distribution record for S. rubrithorax in Brazil's North region needs to be removed, since the previous records were based on occurrence of S. mutucuna. Finally, we present new evidence of cryptic diversity in the S. paynei complex based on molecular information.

Based on material collected during the past 10 years in the State of Esprito Santo and adjacent areas in Minas Gerais, Southeastern Brazil, we identified three species of the genus Thraulodes: T. itatiajanus Traver Edmunds, for which we present new records and description of the female imago; T. luisae Souto, Da-Silva Nessimian, first recorded for the state and for which we describe the nymphal stage; and T. alegre sp. nov., described based on male and female imago. The main diagnostic characteristics of the new species are: color of abdominal terga IVI whitish translucent, terga IIVI with subrectangular dark brown mark near posterior margin and with midway spot; styliger plate triangular and whitish; penes light yellow, with lateral pouch and penes spines long and tapered, with robust bases.

RESUMO

Simulium jeteri (Py-Daniel, Darwich, Mardini, Strieder Coscarón, 2005) was not fully described, because only pharate male and female adults extracted from pupae were used for the original descriptions. Important diagnostic characters were either incompletely or poorly described. During field work in areas at the same hydrographic basin of the type-locality, we were able to rear adult stages. The main objective of this study is to redescribe the male and female of S. jeteri, providing a complete description, including morphological characteristics not reported before, such as, presence of a median ventral projection on male ventral plate and a bilobed anal lobe on female terminalia. Additional characters of pupae and larvae are given. The addition of new characters will be useful to better understand phylogenetic relationships among species in this group. Females of S. jeteri are not known to bite.

Leptohyphes cornutus Allen from Brazil (Santa Catarina) and Misiones, Argentina is re-studied from new material and newly diagnosed as follows: tubercles on head (two pairs), pronotum (two pairs, anterior pair very small), and mesonotum (two pairs), abdominal terga without paired tubercles, nor remnants of them; fore femur length/maximum width, 1.4-1.8; tarsal claws denticulation 4-11+1; hind wing pads present in females; gill formula 3/10/8/8/5. Three new species are described from the nymphal stage: 1) Leptohyphes airuoca sp. nov. from Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) characterized by: i) two paired tubercles on head, two pairs on pronotum, and one pair on mesonotum, abdominal terga VI-IX with single medial tubercle projecting from hind margin; ii) fore femur length/maximum width, 1.7-2.0; iii) tarsal claws denticulation 4+0; iv) hind wing pads absent in female; v) gill formula 3/9/9/7/6. 2) Leptohyphes cornutillus sp. nov. from Espirito Santo (Brazil), with: i) paired tubercles on head (two pairs), pronotum (two pairs, anterior pair very small), and mesonotum (three pairs), abdominal terga with remnants of paired tubercles on hind margin (blunt and short undulations in dorsal view); ii) fore femur length/maximum width, 2.1-2.3; iii) tarsal claws denticulation 6+1; iv) hind wing pads present in females; v) gill formula 3/11/9/9/6. And 3) Leptohyphes nebulosus sp. nov. from Espirito Santo (Brazil), with: i) two paired tubercles on head, one pair on pronotum, and one pair on mesonotum, abdominal terga VI-VII with paired submedian tubercles on hind margin; ii) fore femur length/maximum width, 1.6; iii) tarsal claws denticulation 5+1; iv) hind wing pads present in females; v) gill formula 3/9/9/9/6.

RESUMO

In the present work, based on material from Brazilian Atlantic Forest, four new species of the Hermanella complex are described. The main characteristics that distinguish the new species from its congeners are, in Hermanella amere sp. nov.: (1) subgenital plate yellow, with wide projection near base of forceps; (2) penis lobe with ventral, robust, posterioly directed spine; in Hermanella nigra sp. nov.: (1) subgenital plate brown washed with gray, with wide projection near inner base of forceps; (2) penis lobe with a distomedial membranous projection and ventral, robust, posteriorly directed spine; in Hylister obliquus sp. nov.: (1) subgenital plate yellowish brown, with pointed projection near inner base of forceps; (2) penis lobe with ventral, short, narrow, posteromedially directed spine; in Traverella insolita sp. nov.: (1) subgenital plate strongly projected posteriorly, forming three broad and short projections; (2) penis lobe laterally sinuous and apically rounded, with a ventral, long, narrow spine curved toward the midline of the body. Modified keys of male imagos are provided for the three genera, whereas comments regarding their taxonomy are presented. Additionally, Hermanella mazama (Nascimento, Mariano & Salles 2012 in Lima et al. 2012), comb. nov., is proposed.
